Power-outage preparation begins with the devices you depend on

An outage affects households differently. Someone who relies on powered medical equipment has different needs from someone mainly concerned about a phone battery. Start by identifying the essential dependency.

Ask the right provider

For medical equipment or refrigerated medication, obtain a plan from the relevant clinician, supplier or pharmacist before an outage. Do not improvise a backup that has not been confirmed suitable. Check local emergency and utility guidance.

Prepare ordinary essentials

Keep appropriate lights, charged communication options and a way to receive official information. Follow food-safety guidance for refrigeration disruptions. Avoid repeatedly opening cold storage when trying to preserve its temperature.

Know when to leave

If the home cannot remain safe because of temperature, equipment needs or another hazard, follow local guidance on reaching a suitable place. Ready.gov's outage sheet provides a planning reference, but the details need to match your household. Do not use outdoor combustion equipment indoors. A useful plan identifies not only supplies, but also the point when staying home is no longer the appropriate option.
